Come with me on a creative journey as I paint a new work, “Sourdough”. Hear about the inspiration behind this unusual piece and see a behind-the-scenes time lapse video of its development.
I find I only need a broad inspiration to start work on a new painting. After that the subconscious seems to somehow takeover the direction of the work – things just happen. I start with an outline of a plan, but quickly notice and develop things that just happen. At that point, the original plan is forgotten and I go with the flow.
In this case, I was inspired by a flesh loaf of sourdough I had just cooked. I wasn’t setting out to do a still life of the loaf (a still loaf perhaps?). I liked it’s textural features and started by painting a very rough and broad sketch. And then other considerations predominate – getting a flow, rhythm and balance of colour into the work.
